On behalf of the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, NextGreen is assisting the financial sector in strengthening its capacity to act in the transition toward climate-resilient agriculture and nature in the Netherlands.

Context

In late 2024, NextGreen, together with the Platform for Sustainable Finance and the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality, organized the working conference “Collaborating on Resilient Agriculture and Nature.” More than 100 participants discussed strategies and concrete tools for future-proof and climate-resilient agriculture and nature in the Netherlands.

The working conference identified four areas of action: 1. Sharing and developing knowledge together, 2. Collaborating on data, 3. Developing a fund for Nature-based Solutions, and 4. Connecting networks for climate adaptation in agriculture and nature for the financial sector. NextGreen is facilitating the process of further developing these areas of action into concrete next steps.

Objective

Strengthening the role of the financial sector in the transition to future-proof and climate-resilient agriculture and nature in the Netherlands.
Objective for each action area:

  • A national and more collaborative research agenda on drought and waterlogging, salinization, and heat stress in livestock.
  • Insights into actionable adaptation data for financial institutions.
  • Public-private financing of nature-based solutions.
  • Strengthening the financial sector network and promoting resilient agriculture and nature.
Process approach

In 2025, NextGreen formed a subgroup for each area of focus, comprising participants from the financial sector, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality (LVVN), and other relevant stakeholders, and facilitated several meetings. Each subgroup identified existing initiatives and ongoing actions related to its specific theme, analyzed gaps, and identified the necessary next steps to address those needs.

In 2026, the subgroups will further develop the insights gained into an action plan and implementation strategy. The subgroups focused on “knowledge” and “networking” have been merged to improve access to and dissemination of knowledge.
