Context
Due to increasing drought, heat, heavy downpours, and storms, farmers are seeing reduced harvests, residential damage is rising, and weather-related risks for businesses are growing. This, in turn, also affects insurers, banks that provide loans, and (real estate) investors. In the Netherlands, the financial sector is collaborating on climate adaptation to limit damage and turn risks into opportunities. The Climate Adaptation Working Group is part of the Sustainable Finance Platform, an initiative comprising regulators, government agencies, and knowledge organizations.
Within the Climate Adaptation Working Group, representatives from some 30 financial institutions, government agencies, and other organizations are collaborating to strengthen climate resilience in the Netherlands. Through in-depth analysis and pilot projects, they are exploring ways to integrate climate adaptation into their policies, services, and products. Through the Working Group, we are addressing salinization with farmers on Schouwen-Duiveland, foundation solutions with homeowners in Lingewaard and Rotterdam, and flooding at an industrial park in Súdwest-Fryslân. We do this within the Communication, Housing, Business, Data, and Investments clusters, and we share information through publications and presentations at events.
Objective
- Collaborating on public-private solutions for climate adaptation
- Exploring how insurance, investments, and financing can best contribute to climate adaptation
- Examine which scenarios, methods, and data the financial sector needs to assess the physical impact of climate change on the economy
- Identifying financing and insurance solutions
Process approach
NextGreen facilitates the working group’s collaboration and supports the activities that arise from the working group, such as organizing workshops, launching pilot projects, and producing publications.
NextGreen contributes to the overall strategy and connects pilot ideas with local governments within the network. We support collaboration by fostering mutual understanding of each other’s working methods, developing a common language, and facilitating workshops to promote effective public-private partnerships within the pilots.
