Context

Biodiversity is rapidly declining worldwide. Financial institutions can contribute by gradually moving towards No Net Loss. This means that their financing no longer has a negative impact on biodiversity. In this report, the EU Community of Practice Finance & Biodiversity (CoP F&B) examines how financial institutions can use positive impact financing to reduce biodiversity loss. The report describes the challenges of pro-biodiversity financing and what is needed to accelerate the market.

Approach and activities

The report is based on insights from a workshop organized by the Innovation and Finance work streams of the EU Business & Biodiversity Platform, which brought together various financial institutions and companies. Input was also provided by members of the EU Community of Practice Finance & Biodiversity of the Finance working group and the Business and Biodiversity Offsets Programme. The report was prepared in close collaboration with CoP F&B members, EIB, Finance in Motion, GLS Bank, and Piraeus Bank.
