Report ‘Business models for nature’ launched
There is growing recognition of the importance of investing in nature. Nature-basedsolutions (NbS) are a good example of how to tackle environmental problems while offering multiple socio-economic benefits. Although the financial flow towards NbS is increasing, they remain severely underfunded, and the lack of consistent and profitable revenue streams is a major barrier to scaling up private financing towards NbS. Privately financed nature investments have strong growth potential. However, they require public financial support to reduceinvestment risks, as well as improved policy incentives and tax benefits to scaling up.
This report, developed by members from the financial sector of the EU Business & Biodiversity (B&B) Platform, aims to promote a more sustainable relationship between resilient ecosystems and business activities. It highlights existing business cases that contribute to positive outcomes for nature. These examples have been selected based on high-opportunity sectors, taking into account the materiality and impact of investments, such as in forestry, regenerative agriculture, and urban ecosystems .
The report was presented during our webinar series on COP16, which focused on the private sector's contribution to resource mobilization. The event was jointly organized by UNEP FI, the EU Business and Biodiversity Platform, PRI, and the Finance for Biodiversity Foundation. It was also highlighted during a physical event on Positive Impact & Innovations on October 30 at the Finance and Biodiversity Pavilion in the Blue Zone at COP16 in Cali, Colombia. The discussion revolved around GBF Goal D and Targets 14, 15, 18, and 19.
