New factsheet: Nature at business parks
Opportunities for nature restoration
Business parks offer an opportunity to strengthen biodiversity in urban areas. The new factsheet, “Nature at business parks,” shows how nature-based measures contribute to business continuity, employee well-being, ecological connectivity, and the long-term value of real estate. Collaboration between municipalities, businesses, and financial institutions creates a strong foundation for accelerating nature-positive transitions.
The factsheet "Nature at business parks" also aligns with the implementation of the Nature Restoration Regulation and the National Restoration Plans that member states are currently developing.
European projects and platform
Financial institutions from the European Finance & Biodiversity (F&B) Community created the factsheet together with representatives from governments, companies, and knowledge organisations. The project leader of the European Industrial Business Parks project, IB Green, also joined the effort. It was an insightful experience for all involved to learn from each other’s perspectives, opportunities, and experiences. With this, the Business & Biodiversity Platform—of which the F&B Community is a part of—has taken a significant step toward fostering public-private partnerships around industrial business parks at the European level.
Five steps to a nature-positive business parks
The factsheet outlines a five-step approach to promoting biodiversity in industrial parks:
- Coalition-building and collaboration
- Defining ambitions
- Developing goals and measurable KPIs
- Selecting suitable nature measures
- Developing public-private financing
This provides partners with a structured path to collaboratively develop actionable plans.
Practical examples and measures
The publication features inspiring examples of Nature-Based Solutions, including green roofs and façades, de-sealing, water retention, and ecological management. These examples demonstrate how businesses, park managers, and municipalities can integrate nature into both public spaces and private lots.
An active role for financial institutions
An important part of the factsheet is the three-page financing guide, which provides guidance on public, public-private, and private financial instruments. This enables partners to determine which financing streams align with their plans and how to combine them effectively. The guide highlights the importance of certification and measurable KPIs to secure stacked financing and enhance the measurability of impact.
