The EU Business & Biodiversity Platform published the eighth update to its overview of biodiversity initiatives for financial institutions.

Twenty initiatives

This updated edition features 20 financial sector initiatives related to biodiversity. The overview highlights the ongoing commitment of financial institutions to contributing to global biodiversity goals. The overview, the first edition of which was published in April 2021, is an annual resource designed to help financial institutions identify collaborative initiatives at the intersection of biodiversity and finance.

Partnership

NextGreen created the overview as part of its work for the EU Finance and Biodiversity Community. Participants previously contributed ideas for a template listing the topics they wanted to learn more about. We shared this template within the network of initiatives so that we could then compile the overview. We are publishing the overview via the EU Business & Biodiversity Platform, in collaboration with the Finance for Biodiversity (FfB) Foundation, the United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI), and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI).

Activities related to engagement, measurement, goals, reporting, impact, and advocacy

The publication provides an overview of communities, networks, and initiatives, with details about the target audiences of each initiative and the specific topics they address. These include ESG and engagement, impact measurement and data, goals, reporting, positive impact, and advocacy regarding government policy. The purpose of the overview is to provide insight into the evolving landscape.

What's new in the overview?

Thisupdated edition includes a new initiative—the Ceres Valuing Water Finance Initiative—and the completion of the “Aligning Accounting Approaches for Nature” (ALIGN) initiative. It also incorporates recent publications from most of the initiatives previously included.
