Join the Adaptation Allience, a new coalition founded by and for municipalities, water boards, and provinces that are working together to develop policies and incentives for climate adaptation (and biodiversity) aimed at residents and businesses.

The Adaptation Allience was launched on June 22, 2022, on the initiative of the municipalities of Antwerp, Enschede, Groningen, Harderwijk, and Uitgeest. They invite colleagues to join them.

The initiative has now been underway for four months. Together with the participants, it was decided to focus on three target groups, which are being addressed in separate working groups:

1. Industrial parks
2. Housing associations
3. Homeowners

The industrial estates working group has been launched, followed by the other two working groups.

Climate adaptation

Climate change and increasing urbanization mean that we are increasingly faced with flooding, drought, and heat. To make cities climate-proof, more space is needed for greenery and water. Municipalities and water boards cannot achieve this on their own, as public space accounts for only 30 to 40 percent of the total surface area in cities.

Encouraging private parties

To create a climate-resilient and biodiverse living environment, it is necessary to encourage private parties to take action as well. With an appropriate mix of communication, financial incentives, and legal instruments, you can encourage residents and businesses to take the most effective measures locally.

Adaptation Alliance

The Adaptation Allience offers space to learn, explore, and develop together. It focuses on the question of how local governments can encourage residents and businesses to design their buildings and gardens in a nature-inclusive and climate-resilient way. And how to use the most appropriate mix of participation, communication, financial incentives, and legislation and regulations to achieve this. The aim is to accelerate climate-proof and nature-inclusive design by embedding it more firmly in local government policy.

Working groups

By working together in working groups and developing ideas together, we can strengthen and improve internal efficiency around the themes of climate adaptation and biodiversity. Working groups consist of 4 to 8 participating members (municipality, water board, or province). The first three working groups focus on building owners: business parks, housing associations, and homeowners.

Participants in the Adaptation Allience enjoy the following benefits:

• Participation in at least 4 meetings per year of 1 or 2 working groups
• Access to reports of all meetings of all working groups
• Help determine which products are developed
• Contributing to jointly developed products, also based on own practice and relevant questions
• Demand-driven connection to the extensive network of NextGreen and Stroom en Onderstroom with knowledge institutions, financial institutions, umbrella organizations, municipalities, water boards, provinces, and ministries.
• Participation in an annual broad meeting together with the KANS and GNK networks.
