Duration 2024–2025
Commissioned by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency, NextGreen investigated the application of “Reflexive Monitoring in Action” within the “Landscapes of the Future” program.
Context
Reflexive Monitoring in Action (RMA) is a proven method for projects involved in complex transition challenges. It is a way of thinking and observing that helps stakeholders steer toward systemic change. We do this by maintaining a structured overview of successes and challenges, facilitating collective learning, and making joint adjustments based on this. Practical tools have been developed for this purpose, such as the system analysis or the Dynamic Learning Agenda (DLA). Using these tools, we help projects and programs understand their place within the broader transition and stay on course.
The "Work Landscapes of the Future" (WvdT) program is working to transform the more than 3,000 industrial parks in the Netherlands on a large scale. WvdT aims to make industrial parks in the Netherlands greener, thereby making them more climate-resilient and healthier. As part of this major undertaking, NextGreen supports the program with reflexive monitoring.
Objective
Exploring Reflexive Monitoring in Action as a learning methodology within Work Landscapes for the Future. This exploration has three sub-goals:
- Identify and develop opportunities for reflective monitoring.
- Organizing the support of collective learning.
- Contribute to achieving the desired transition more effectively.
Process approach
NextGreen investigated the use of Reflexive Monitoring in Action (RMA) within the various WvdT domains and the program as a whole. To this end, we conducted desk research and spoke with coalition partners about the learning objectives and intended outcomes of RMA. The interactive nature of these discussions fostered a sense of ownership and raised awareness of the importance of RMA. We provided advice on periodic reporting and contributed ideas for a session on the coherence of projects within the broader transition. We compiled the results into a report structured like a handbook. It was presented to the broader coalition during a “working landscapes” meeting.
