Duration 2022 – present
The Adaptation Allience Foundation was established in response to the desire of municipalities, water boards, and provinces to accelerate climate adaptation in collaboration with private partners.
Context
The Adaptation Alliance stems from the Alliance for Financial Incentives for Climate Adaptation. Within the Alliance, municipalities shared their experiences from pilot projects involving financial incentives designed to encourage private entities to undertake climate adaptation measures. NextGreen and Stroom en Onderstroom facilitated this Alliance and supported the development of a Policy Mixer by municipalities and a water board. Upon completion in 2021, it became clear that municipalities, water boards, and provinces had a strong need to continue learning from one another and thus further develop local incentive policies and associated regulations together. To meet this need, the Adaptation Workshop was established. Since 2023, the Adaptation Workshop has been operating as a foundation.
Objective
- Organizing collaboration around specific themes and by (private) stakeholder group for climate adaptation
- Exploring and examining the use of financial incentives as a motivator
- Strengthen collaboration with financial institutions
Approach and activities
Within the Adaptation Alliance, we have set up working groups organized by specific stakeholder groups, such as business parks and housing associations. These mixed working groups collaborate on concrete deliverables—such as fact sheets or a Green Deal approach—based on a shared plan. Through the pilot approach, partners work in a concrete and area-specific manner on green-blue solutions with their businesses, housing associations, residents, and/or banks and insurers.
In addition, the Adaptation Atelier hosts a Community of Practice focused on climate adaptation and nature. Via its participation in a European project, the Adaptation Atelier is also establishing a learning community centered on integrated collaboration. This will enable municipalities to effectively integrate climate adaptation into the design and management of public spaces.
