Context

Climate change and increasing urbanization are leading to more flooding, drought, and heat. To make cities climate-proof, more space for greenery and water is needed. Municipalities and water boards have an important role to play in achieving this, but they cannot do it alone: around 50 to 70% of the surface area in cities is privately owned. In this report, NextGreen and Stroom en Onderstroom have looked at the possible financial incentives for achieving a climate-proof Netherlands by 2050.

Approach and activities

As part of ambition 5, ‘Encourage and facilitate’, of the Delta Plan for Spatial Adaptation, an inventory was made of the various types of incentives that municipalities and water boards can use to encourage residents and businesses to design their buildings and/or gardens in a climate-conscious manner. The results provide insight into the current state of affairs and offer perspective on the next steps.
