Context
Climate change is causing more extreme weather. This has consequences for both existing neighborhoods and new area development. In order to ensure a pleasant living environment now and in the future, the municipality of Rotterdam wants to limit the potential damage and nuisance caused by climate change. Is there a role for the financial sector in this challenge? NextGreen, Samen Klimaatbestendig, and Rodenburg Water Advies have investigated this. This case study summarizes the seven most important insights for public-private partnerships.
Approach and activities
In eight meetings and a round table discussion with various financial organizations, the municipality of Rotterdam and NextGreen explored future challenges and opportunities. ABN AMRO, APG, Altera Vastgoed, Achmea, Nationale Nederlanden, NWB Bank, Rabobank, Stimuleringsfonds Volkshuisvesting, and the Dutch Association of Insurers shared their concerns and possible solutions. The case description was used as a basis for further cooperation between the municipality of Rotterdam and the financial sector.
