Visual story about analysis of finance's role in climate adaptation published
The consequences of climate change are impacting the financial sector. The graphic story 'Making the Netherlands more climate-proof: what role do financial institutions play?' presents an analysis of opportunities for further cooperation with governments. The analysis and overview of numerous sources is based on 20 interviews with financial institutions and governments, supplemented by desk research.
NextGreen developed this visual story in collaboration with Samen Klimaatbestendig (Climate Resilient Together) and the Association of Investors for Sustainable Development (VBDO). Climate Risk Services provided the expert review of the results, together with the discussion partners. The visual story is a series of infographics with explanations and examples. It provides an overview of current developments in climate adaptation at both financial institutions and governments. Both focus on stimulating climate adaptation with their instruments to the same groups, such as companies, homeowners, real estate owners, and housing associations. The analysis of the playing field has resulted in a number of recommendations for acceleration, such as better coordination between financial institutions and governments on their risk analyses, communication, and financial incentives. In addition, the glossary has been added as a first step towards a more common language, in order to make the dialogue between financial institutions and governments more effective.
In addition to the visual story, NextGreen and the VBDO also wrote an internal memo that was shared with the discussion partners. Furthermore, some insights from this project were incorporated into the Explained film of the City Deal Climate Adaptation, which premiered during the Climate Adaptation Summit (January 25-26).
The results were very well received by the various discussion partners and form a good basis for any follow-up steps.
Starting in January 2021, Anne-Marie Bor from NextGreen will be working part-time at Samen Klimaatbestendig as a liaison with financial institutions.
